Annoying Sewing Machine

So pissed today. I went to Goodwill and bought a bunch of men's shirts because they're only $1 on 50% off day. I'd planned on ripping them up and sewing them into tank tops and vests- even went and got some fun zippers. Turns out, my sewing machine is on the fritz. I have no idea what's wrong with it. Everything looks fine to me, but it fucking won't work. I'm so frustrated at this point. I've never had a problem with it before and I don't think you can even bring it in to fix it. It's not like there's a help line that gets forwarded to India for assistance in fixing your sewing machine like there is for your computer. That would be kind of amusing though. I was talking to my Dad (who's been an upholster for years) and he said the cost of repairing a machine is not worth it compared to the cost of a new one. I'm really reluctant to buy one. Yes, they're relatively cheap, but I've only had mine for two years, and have gone months without using it, so it has no wear or tear. Plus, it still looks pristine. It was easy to leave my old sewing machine behind when I moved because it looked old (which is was) and would've been worth maybe $10. Maybe JoAnn's can help me.
My plan was then to hand sew the vest I was working on. I used to hand sew all the time when I was younger, mainly because I was scared of the sewing machine and had no clue how to use it. Apparently it's been 50 years since I last hand-stitched anything because I was bored with it within minutes and no longer wanted to sew. You get used to finishing seams super fast with a machine that doing it by hand looks messy and takes forever. No thanks.

  1. I hate it when machines break. I have no clue how to fix most machines. My coffee pot broke yesterday and I want to throw it real hard. Went to McDonalds this morning for coffe before I could even blog. Gaaaaa.

  2. My dad has a commercial sewing machine (upholster) and he said that it's not even worth it to fix my little Singer- that it can cost upwards of $50, when the initial cost was only about 98 bucks. Luckily, I twiddled a few buttons and it presto! It works again!

  3. What's wrong with your machine? Maybe if you tell us, someone will be able to help you out and it won't cost you a dime!

  4. It's working now, but for a while the needle just wouldn't move. As in, I'd press on the peddle, and nothing would happen. There would be a loud "whrrrrrrrrr" sound, but the needle physically would not move. Is it plugged in? Check. Nothing wrong with the bobbin? Check. Pull apart the entire guts of the machine and everything looks ok? Check...I guess. I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like!
Anyways, so even though its fine and dandy now, I'm sure in a couple of weeks it'll bust again, because this is not the first, nor the second, nor even the fifth time it's happened. Really irritating, considering my former machine was about 35 years old and sounded like a jet engine taking off, yet never ever broke on me. I'm much to young to feel this way about technology.

  5. BTW, Kylie's Mom, are you from Canada? You mentioned Canada day on your blog. Here in Phoenix, I'm constantly being mistaken for a Canadian because I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and my accent is startling similar to stereotypical Canadians (eh after sentences, etc.)
If you are Canadian, I am intensely jealous because you have some good tv programming, and a much better national anthem (sung in FRENCH!) before your hockey games.

  6. ROFL!!! Yes, I'm in Alberta. Do we have an accent? I guess I hear it everyday so I'm used to it! We never hear the anthem sung in French here in the west, only during hockey and I (gasp) don't like hockey. Good to hear your machine is working again.
